D-Link 624 Twin Antennas - Can I "join" them

Does anyone know the answer to this one.

I use to have a 900AP+ one antenna with a ANT24-1200 which worked
great. Strong signals everwhere in the house.

I now have a 624+ set up as my WAP - I attach the ANT24 to one of the
antenna sockets but my signal strength has dropped  - this has been
confusing me! Is it that I am only boosting half the signal output? Is
that a correct interpretation?

If it is can I join the antennas internally within the box?

TIA.

fwiw,
there's an original di624a here with twin antennas and a 6db panel on one
side... it frequently will connect with low signal, I assume standard
antenna from prior nothing but standard antenna experiences, but after a
minute or so of web surfing the signal strength jumps and sticks at higher
levels.
