Boingo-like program for Linux?

I don't think you understand what I'm looking for. I'm familiar with
netstumber, kismet, ethereal, etc.
What I want is not just the ability to detect all wi-fi networks out
there but LET ME CONNECT TO ONE I SELECT, like Boingo does. I don't
believe any of the above programs do that (unless I just haven't seen
the option yet).

ap to ap to laptop question
teksaport -
26 Mar 2005 12:35 PM - 2 messages
Hi anyone, I have a remote piece of property a mountain between me and
the city. I am only in the planning stage, and I am working this out
legally, so no real issues here. Plus it only about 5 miles. So my
question is regarding ap to ap setup.
Whats the difference between ap client and ap bridge? What I want is:
1) on the mountain put up a passive repeater (yagi/parabolic,pringles
whatever). One to the city and the other to my property.
2) on my property have an antenna, which is attached to a local AP on
my property, pointing to the mountain.
So what I want to do is have my laptop communicate via wireless to my
local AP, and any other computers I allow, (preferably doing dhcp, nat,
firewalling, etc for my side), and have my local AP acting as a client
to the city AP passing along my traffic as if I was in the main
building in the city.
What do I use for an AP on my property that will act as a normal AP for
my laptop, but also act as client for the AP in the city? And if I
have the local antenna attached to the local AP (pointing to the
mountain), do I also need
another antenna for my local communications?
Thanks so much,
Tek

Satellite to Outbuildings
LisaH -
22 Mar 2005 11:57 PM - 4 messages
I live on a farm and have recently installed a satellite internet
connection in our home office. I would like to set up a wireless
connection between the home office (S side of house) to the scale shed
(N of house) and to the shop office (N of house, N side of metal
building). The two remote computers are older and are only being used
to order parts / check weather on-line (dial-up). The farthest
distance is from the office to the shop office - about 600ft.
I have a Linksys WRT54G broadband router in the office. It works
beautifully with my laptop.
Using powerlines is not an option - I have separate drops / meters for
the hour and outbuildings.
Is there a simple and inexpensive way to set this network up?
thanks

Re: Anyone get Dlinks DI-524 WPA-PSK function to work?
rhutson -
21 Mar 2005 7:04 PM - 2 messages
I am having the exact same problem. After setting the router (DI-524,
H/W A1, F/W 1.05) and client (Atheros AR5005GS built-in) to WPA-PSK and
TKIP (and ensuring the 802.1x box is unchecked on the client), it will
connect, but every minute or so it will get 'Windows was unable to find
a certificate to log you on to network <SSID>', and then I get
disconnected. As it is WPA-PSK and not just WPA, there should be no
certificates involved. It usually reconnects within a minute, but this
is unacceptable. My OS is XP SP2, all updates applied. All
firmware/drivers are current. I tried using static DHCP, but get the
same results. WEP works fine, and that is what I have fallen back to,
along with MAC filtering. I have called D-Link tech support on this,
and they basically gave me the run around, suggested I find another
client to test with and if it too has the same problem, to call them
back. They had me change channels and other things that shouldn't
matter. I don't think they have a clue. I have seen similar posts and
suspect that D-Link never got WPA-PSK working.
