I see after reviewing those 2 camcorders- one significant difference is that
the Sony has a touch screen viewfinder. At the age of 58, even with
bi-focals, my vision ain't what it used to be reading small print and using
small buttons and controls- I think I might have better results with the
touch screen viewfinder than the buttons on the Canon.

Otherwise, the Sony seems a bit more souped up but not by much- and a bit
more expensive.

So, am I exaggerating the value of the touch screen viewfinder? Yes, I go to
stores and try them out there- but one can't tell much from a few minutes
like that.

Also, I see another group called rec.video.professional which gets no
traffic.

You seem to be manually putting "Re: " in your subject line and *not*
replying to a previous post.

Here's why I say that: Your posts are not showing up in a thread here,
and your headers don't show a prior post that you are replying to.

If that's what you're doing: it's not the best practice. If  you're
actually replying to a post, then perhaps your newsreader is messed up.
Since it seems to be the new Windows Mail, I guess that could be.

Gene, I was actually replying to one of my previous posts- the original
might have been a week or two earlier so you missed it. (and, I snipped out
some of my original post)

No, there's some problem. It might be with my newsreader, but I doubt
it. Or should I say maybe I doubt it :-) I don't normally lose the
start of threads only a few weeks (or even months) old, and I can't
find a reference header in your previous post (although there's one in
the post I'm answering here - strange). Basically, your previous reply
shows up as the start of a thread with nothing in the header indicating
the prior posts in the original thread.

The problem might be with your ISP -- or else *my* ISP or its customer
- me :-)

I am not qualified to solve this mystery, and I'd say further that I'm
not even qualified to make any further remarks (except maybe some
humorous ones).

So, I'll bow out - hopefully gracefully.

I picked the HDR-HC7 after a lot of research. I'm very pleased with it, the
resolution via HDMI is superb, and it stands a lot of blowing up, even to a
big 100 inch projected picture, far more so than previous generation
camcorders. I can't see any artifacts that would put me off buying it at
this point. It's good to be able to take 4mp stills at the same time you are
taking movies. These stills (which are recorded separately on the memory
stick) have given me some quite acceptable 6 x 4 prints (which I wouldn't
otherwise have got). Another point is that when you pause a movie, the
resolution of the paused frame is a lot better than I got from a SDV
camcorder.

In the dedicated stills mode, you get 6mp stills recorded separately on the
memory stick. Perhaps not great for A3 sized prints, but on screen and for 6
x 4 prints, they do the job quite well.

I think the build of the HDR-HC7 is very nice and it fits really snugly into
your hand and is not uncomfortable, even after long periods of holding it.

Hope this helps.

David
