When reading reviews of this camcorder- it seems that the most common
complaint is about the built in mike. Has Canon addressed this issue?

Joe,

The HV20 is a great camcorder, but like most consumer machines is limited in
the audio somewhat. The HV20 users forum at:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/forumdisplay.php?f=139

has plenty of people like myself who own and use the HV20, and some of their
choices in "add-on" external mics. I personally do not use an extra mic, but
occasionally miss having one.

As to whether Canon has "addressed this issue"........

the HV20 has been out for a relatively short time and I doubt that Canon
will make any major retrofit or firmware change to the HV20. Perhaps a
future "HV30" or some other model may have a different / better mic
arrangement, but who knows. My two Sony HDV camcorders were really not any
better in audio than the Canon.
