Problem with WMP11

Some of my saved .wmv and .avi videos now won't play in WMP11.  Sometimes a
get a message saying it is an recognised format, sometimes it plays without
audio and sometimes the first scene is display and by the HD activity WMP11
is reading the file but the displays stays locked on the first scene.

Using the freebie Gspot, I can see what codec is required and I can confirm
that the codec is installed.  In 1 case I reinstalled the codec, but it
didn't fix the problem.

I have run sfc.exe.  I have uninstalled WMP (but I bet there were hooks left
everywhere) and reinstalled.

These files used to play in WMP11.  VLC will play all the files, so all vid
files are OK

Any help, please?

I had similar problems. I re-installed WMP and they went away. Maybe
Microsoft did a quiet fix between the two downloads.

An update

XP Pro, SP2.  Update on WMP not playing some files (no audio) and playing no
mp3.  I had experienced this problem earlier with WMP11, and in the past a
restore fixed it.  This time I tried many things including a careful
uninstall of everything I could find to do with WMP.  Then reinstalled
WMP10.  Still the same problem.  So updated to WMP11 again, and still the
same problem.

Tonight I found Tools, Devices, Speakers and changed Default Sound Device to
AC97 Audio, and now it works.  I have never had to worry about this before
and did not know about it.  One lesson learned.

Regards
Doug
