making a podcast?

I don't yet have a video camera but I'm beginning to research such a
purchase.

Meanwhile, I just came across on the net a video podcast. The file type is
..wmv.

I'm not yet familiar with video file formats. But, whatever they are, how
are they converted to .wmv? Can that be done by most video software editing
programs?

I'm unsure.  I use a mac and podcasting is pretty easy to do using
Apple software (Garageband, iMovie, iWeb, iPhoto).  It podcasts in the
end are some kind of xml wrapper around whatever files are being used.
For my audio podcasts, they would have started life as mp3's.  My video
podcasts were .mov files, but I assume I could have used .avi files.
wmv?  Sure, I guess they would work fine.

wmv files are Windows Media Player video files. I'm just starting to
put video on the net for podcasting and have decided to go with
Quicktime because I can get the best quality/size using the H264 codec
of Quicktime pro. What I'll do is edit my videos and then render as
avi. I can then render an H264 using Quicktime Pro ($30). This IS an
extra step but the extra work is worth it when you see the size of the
high-quality files.
