mini dv camcorder-won't play?

Hello-not sure if this is right group for this posting -so sorry in
advance if it's not appropriate.

Basically problem is -got canon mini dv mv5i out after months of it
being idle.
Refuses to play any tapes-from the button you depress to play-but will
rewind and fast foward if you press those buttons.It appears to record
because the counter seems to work however I can't check if it is
recording.
Desperate to sort it out as I want to film a nativity play tomorrow
night!

Your best bet is to hire or borrow a camcorder real soon...

A quick alternate test is to plug in the mains power and see if it
works better. If that doesn't help, disconnect the mains power and the
battery, wait 10 or 15 minutes, reconnect all, and try again. Sometimes
that can reset the internal electronics.

I'm not optimistic, but I hope I'm wrong.
