Sony DCR-TRV900 Spinning Sound

Prior to today my camcorder was working fine.  When I turned it on
today there was a very noticeable spinning sound coming from the
camera.  I tried a different tape and I still have the sound.  With the
on/off switch in the "Camera" position I get the spinning sound all of
the time.  In the "VTR" position I get the spinning sound when I am
playing some tape or moving forward/backwards, but when I hit stop the
sound winds down.  In the "Memory" position I don't get a spinning
sound. I don't know what to do with this position so I am not sure
about all operations within this switch setting.  When I am in the
"Camera" position I get the spinning sound but when I open the tape
holder the sound winds down.  It takes about 10 seconds for the sound
to wind down.  The camera seems to be able to record and play back
video even with this sound.  The sound is loud enough to hear from 15
feet away.

Could someone tell me what is causing the sound and how to find someone
to repair the camera.

Thanks so much for the help ... Michael

There is nothing wrong with your camcorder.   That is exactly how it is
supposed to work.   Did you recently have your ears cleaned or did you
just get a hearing aid?

Thanks for the input.  All suggestions are appreciated.  There has been
no change to my hearing.  The noise from the camera has increased to
the point you have to turn the volume way up to hear the recorded
sound.  Before you could not hear anything coming from the camera.

Thanks again ... Michael

In all seriousness, it seems to me that your recorder is failing. The
bearings of the spinning record/play heads (30 turns per second in NTSC
land) are wearing out, or the bearings have lost their lubrication.

I have no idea if it can be repaired economically; it might be a good
excuse to buy a new camcorder...

Sony has a "flat rate repair estimate" of $331.  This of course
requires the addition of insured shipping on my part and I have to
assume that the repair (which is only an estimate) might be more.
Certainly not less.  I have found a place in Delray, Florida which will
take a look at it for $35.  The cost to replace the drum assembly is
$340.  Hopefully that will not be the problem.  The camera is a 3CCD
and cost me a fortune when it was new.  I will make a post when they
tell me what is wrong...  The camera in working condition (I assume) is
going for around $800 "Buy it now" on EBay.

Thanks again for the help ... Michael

I had the camera repaired.  I was told that the drum assembly needed to
be replaced.  I asked for the old drum back (which I got).  If you hold
the drum such that you can spin it with your finger, there was a
noticeable sound created by the spinning of the drum. I assume it was a
bearing issue.  The camera was selling on EBay for around $750 and it
cost me $340 to repair.

Thanks to everyone for their help ... Michael
