When I connect my sony dcr-trv38 to my laptop via usb, my computer does
not seem to recognize the camcorder unless I move the camcorder switch
to 'memory stick.'  Memory stick is just for still pics, but I want to
transfer some video onto my laptop.  Anyone have any suggestions about
how to make my laptop recognize the camcorder.  I did install some
image transfer software that came with the camcorder, but it didn't
seem to help.  Any ideas are much appreciated!!  Mike

And, that is what USB is also for, so it is working as intended.

Once you connect the firewire port of the camcorder to the firewire
port of your computer, the software should find the camcorder. If your
computer doesn't have a firewire port, you will need to install the
propper card.
