How does Sony VX2100 camcorder autofocus work?

I have a Sony VX2100 camcorder that I had to reattach the front lens to
after it broke off. Everything works except it won't autofocus at all.
The manual focus ring works so I know the focus motor and driver are
good. Does anyone have a good explaination on how this autofocus works
so I know what to look for to troubleshoot it? I have the service
manuals for this but the lens assembly is considered a repair by
replacement part so there is very little about it in the manual.

I do need the flat cable that goes into the lens assembly. It is only
pointed out in the service manual as a 27P (27 connectors) cable. I've
checked with Sony and their research department and that part isn't
available as a spare part. The only way I can get it is if someone is
selling off their broken camera for parts. Is that what you are doing
or do you only get new Sony parts?.

Lucky you: you are the first person I noticed who has responded to
what, it seems to me, is our newest spammer on a few video groups.
