It is one of the best but I would rate it behind the previous 2 years
models (x1x, x2x).   I have the 830 which would be identical to the 730
plus it came with a detachable printer.   These 3rd generation models
were the first to use the 1 megapixel CCD which gives a better
resolution still picture to the memory stick but the low-light
sensitivity was poorer than x1x and x2x models because the higher pixel
count required the pixels to be smaller in order to fit them all on the
CCD.    Smaller pixels pick up less light.

I would rate the models this way:
1. x2x Best (3.5" and 4" LCD couldn't be beat and the CCD was rated as
1 lux)
2. x1x next (lacked pass-through mode but still rated at 1 lux)
3. x3x things started to go wrong this year (bottom loader, 7 lux CCD)
4. x4x Sony started to remove features this year and every year after
they got worse.
5. x5x Start of the "black screen ccd failures. More things removed.
6  x6x more things removed
7. x8x These were the last made (they skipped over the x7x model
series)?  The 480 sold out in 2005 but the 280 is still available in
2006 until the supply is gone.   No more D8's.

I have both the 320 and 720.   They are both great but the 4" LCD on
the 720 is fantastic.   These are my top D8 picks.

Oh, please.

Though it was one of the best _Digital 8_ camcorders, it is a far cry from
the best camcorder.  Even ignoring questions like head wear on a used a
machine, as well as the advisability of purchasing a machine that uses what
is, essentially, an obsolete format, it doesn't remotely compare to the
video quality of, for example, the VX2100 (or it's predecessor, the VX2000,
which I use).  It has a 1/4" single-sensor CCD, which will result in
mediocre to poor low-light performance when compared to 1/3" sensor and
3-ccd machines.
