Okay, folks my 5 year old put a VHS tape in the machine backwards,
really, it wasn't me. Anyway, it's sticking half way out of the machine
but that's as far as it goes. Is there a trick to getting it out?
Besides taking the machine apart?

If you're willing to destroy the tape you might be able to
get it out without disassembling the VCR.  If it was shoved
in with enough force the timing of the loading gears may
be off.

Usually the cover comes off pretty easily, with about four screws, then
you can usually maneuver the tape out from inside.  Not too difficult,
generally.

Well you might not have to do MUCH of that.  It is probably worth your
time to at least remove the top cover and see if you can get things out
that way.  Beyond that it's your call as to whether you can do it or
need a technician and with prices of VCR's these days, that's
questionable unless the tape is of value to you.
