I want to transfer VHS to DVD.  Do I have to buy a combo VHS/DVD
Burner, or can I just buy a DVD burner and use my separate VCR?

They work pretty much like a VCR (output to input, push play/record),
so no not necessary.

Has anyone ever done this?  Especially with a Philips DVD burner.

I so it all the time with a stand alone with a Philips DVD recorder.
Although, my understanding is that it is a DVD "recorder" and the term
"burner" is reserved for a computer interfaced one that runs in greater
than real time. Someone correct me if that is wrong.

As I said in my previous post, it works like a VCR and you can record
from tapes or off the air. I also use it's firewire connection to
record video that I have edited on my computer, but in :real time", not
like a software based burner.

Yes - a burner is a drive connected to a computer (internally or by
FireWire or USB2) and a recorder is a box connected into your stereo
system. You knew that, Dave :-)

While I'm here I might as well reinforce your remarks about what a
recorder acts like. As you say, it records from a TV aerial or from an
A/V input - it works exactly like a VCR.
