Converting NTSC to Pal from hi-8 digital?

I need some advice. I will be filming a wedding using a Sony Hi-8
Digital camcorder. I will be putting the video unedited onto 2 sets of
DVD's. One set will be NTSC encoded, and the other PAL encoded. I will
run the original Hi-8 digital into my Panasonic DVD recorder for the
NTSC version. Will Toast be able to copy and convert the NTSC DVD into a
PAL DVD? I'm using Toast Titanium 7.0.2 on a 733 PowerMac G4, OS 10.4.6
Does this sound do-able? If not, suggestions please. I don't want to use
IMovie, there's no editing,  and there will be 6 hours of video to burn.
I'll only put a maximum of 2 hours on each DVD.
TIA, Terry

Hi-8 digital?It's either hi-8 (analogue) or digital 8.I presume it's digital
8?

So you're using a stand-alone DVD recorder to burn unedited and then use
your mac to burn a <PAL> set of DVDs?AFAIK there is gear in Europe that
plays back NTSC recordings.Maybe you can ask the receiver of your DVDs if
they can playback NTSC ones?Does your Toast software have options for
burning PAL DVDs?

After doing some Google searching, it seems that any DVD player made in
the last 5 years will play an NTSC DVD-R onto a PAL TV.

I have no idea about the capabilities of that software, but if it's
merely a burning/authoring program as the name suggests, it probably
cannot. You need to convert the whole MPEG stream before feeding it
into the authoring software, which is a job for video editing software.

My approach would be completely different:
NTSC video -> hardware standards converter  -> PAL capable DVD recorder

Of course you need the hardware to do that, no idea if you do.

Stimmt, aber viel einfacher wäre das fertige DVD auf einem Spielgerät mit
"NTSC wiedergabe auf PAL TV", oder?

Let me translate back to English for the rest of the world :)

Tzortzakakis asks: "Wouldn't it be simpler to just play the original
DVD on a 'NTSC on PAL playback' player"

My view on this: Of course, 99% of all European DVD players are NTSC
capable. There are different approaches on this: A few have a
full-grown standards converter, they output a proper PAL signal from an
NTSC disk. However the majority of players output "PAL 60", which is a
non-standard compromise signal. This has several problems.

- For one, not all television sets can cope with it (even though the
majority can). Those that cannot will show an instable picture.
- Second, it cannot be dubbed e.g. to a VCR.

So sending the recipients a PAL disk will not be a futile endeavour,
it'll spare some of them problems they might otherwhise encounter. It
depends if the OP wants to invest the extra work for this.
