Replacement battery and Canon camcorder charging

I recently bought the bp-2L12/14 compatible battery, but when I try to
charge it in my Canon mvx350i camcorder-builtin charger, it won't
charge it properly. It seems it gets only half full.

Is there something wrong with the battery or is there some logic built
into the camcorder charger that prevents the battery from charging
properly? Is the battery supposed to act like a 100% copy of the Canon
battery?

I never buy third-party batteries becasue I am afraid of things like
what you report here.

Of course, this is not real proof of anything other than my own
paranoia :-)

However, with any luck, someone else on this NG will give you good
information based on knowledge.

I am not certain of which manufacturer makes the battery you mention
but third-party batteries are not inherently bad.  It sounds to me as
if yours is defective, especially if you can charge your original Canon
battery with no problem.  We usually recommend Lenmar or Power 2000 and
have had no trouble with either.

If your original battery charges fine you might see if you can borrow
another charger to try.  That being said, my guess is that you've got a
defective battery.

Good luck.

somewhat related to your question i just posted some Li-ion battery
handling tips:

possible, but much less likely

yes. third party batteries may (but not necessarily) degrade quicker or
be of shady origin and if so, have had longer shelf life, which is bad
for li-ion batteries. but otherwise, there's nothing inherently bad
about third party batteries. i've used them (for my canon still camera)
and they work very nicely.

overheating will rapidly reduce battery capacity, so if you think it
may have been exposed in the past, that could be the culprit.
