I am buying a Camcorder which I am going to use
in conjuction with Final Cut Pro video editing software.

I was going to buy the Canon Optura 600 but its
not to be found. CompUSA or BestBuy says it has been
discontinued.

I want to spend about 1,000 is it possible to get a
semi pro camcorder for this price.

I am starting a Masters program in Digital Media
this year so I will be using and becoming aquainted with
this camcorder.

Presently I am not all that well informed except I know
I need a Tape vs DVD. This I learned after buying the
DC 40 Canon mini DVD camcorder.

But

thanks

Kevin

There isn't anything very close to professional that cheap, unless you
buy used - then you should only buy if you've tested it yourself, not
just something you've seen on eBay. I'm not sure what a masters in
Digital Media is, but I'm surprised you can come this far and still
need to ask this sort of question. Oh - and don't buy a DVD camera, the
results are junk and will be for a while yet. Stick to DV.

Kevin,

Don't buy a DVD camcorder.  The selection is limited and the results
won't be good.

You are using top-flight software.  Be sure you have a Mac that can
handle it.  Limiting yourself to a $1000 or less camcorder is not going
to give you results worthy of the software.  Granted, you can learn to
use the software but you'll be limited to a single-chip camcorder and a
consumer one at that.

It's possible we might have some extra demo/rental units close to that
price range that might give you a little more bang for your buck but
nothing in that price range will give you professional features or
results.

If you were considering the Canon DC 40 miniDV you may want to take a look
at 3 Panasonic 3CCD models I believe will be better suited to your needs.
The Canon camcorder is only a single CCD and the 3CCD models will yield a
better picture quality. Professional models by Canon, Sony, JVC, etc. have
3CCD's so it makes sense to go that route. Plus, the Panasonic 3CCD miniDV
models are priced from $599.99 to $999.99 MSRP. I am sure you could find one
at Circuit City, Best Buy or some place for less.

The Panasonic 3CCD models are:
PV-GS500 with 4.0 Megapixel Stills $999.99
PV-GS300 with 3.0 Megapixel Stills $699.99
PV-GS180 with 3.1 Megapixel Stills $599.99
