Puzzle Cable/vcr hookup

About a week or so ago, someone here responded to my connection problem.
I did as he instructed me to do...Hook up my Time warner cable directly
to my vcr rf in and my vcr rf out to my tv tuner and do an autoscan to
both. It works just as he said, controlling my tv tuner with the remote
and not having to have the vcr on....BUT, and this is a big but, I
cannot get some of my good cable channels from the cable reciever to my
HDTV. In fact, what I did get were the same cable channels that I
experimented with, when I hooked up my road runner cable to my HDTV,
prior to having my cable installed. Even the channel numbers changed as
compared to when I had the cable on my HDTV. The VCR is a S-vhs reciever
not more than 2 or 3 years old. Why would I get different configurations
in this type of hook up? I would like to get the same channels I saw on
my HDTV before I hooked it directly to my vcr. It seems the only way
that I am aware of on how to do this, is to have cable in going to the
cable box cable in port and the cable rf out going to the vcr rf in. But
in this setup, I am not able to view cable on my TV tuner.

Make sure that both the TV and VCR are set for cable rather than
antenna.

I'm not sure I understand parts of your explanation, but I'll tell you
what I can.

If you want to view digital cable channels, you must use the cable
box.  Your TV & VCR are most likely only able to receive analog cable
channels (1-125, I think).  The cable box will put whatever channel
it's tuned to out to channel 3 for viewing on your TV & VCR.  The
drawback to that is that, when connected to the cable box via its RF
out, the tuners in your TV & VCR are no longer useful for any channel
other than 3; they become completely dependent on the cable box for
tuning.  Among other things, that prevents you from watching one
channel while recording another.  Depending on what connections you
have available on your cable box, VCR, and TV (and on exactly what you
would like to be able to do), there may be ways to improve that
situation to some extent.

As I said to you: "Keep the HDTV receiver hooked up to the VCR and/or
the tuner card only via A/V outs, not the RF out."  The HDTV receiver
is your cable box.

You said you had a computer tuner card, not an HDTV.

If you only have a tuner card, hook up the box A/V outs to the VCR or
card's A/V in.  I suggest hooking it up the VCR's A/V in, then the VCR
A/V outs to the tuner card.  You will then see the cable box output as
you were used to with the box's channel assignments via the VCR A/V
outs or the VCR RF out when the VCR tuner is set to the A/V input.

If you have a HDTV, you should also have the cable box component vid
or DVI/HDMI out going directly to the TV.  Digital audio out from the
cable box should go to a digital receiver, if you have one.  If not,
the analog audio outs need to go to the TV as well, connected to the
appropriate audio input that matches with the vid ins I just
mentioned.

You should be able to see the cable box output as you were used to
with the box's channel assignments through the component or DVD/HDMI
input.
