I'm looking for a telephot lens for my Sony DCR HC90
I have two choices from Sony
the     VCL-HG2030 30mm High Grade 2.0X
and the     VCL-2030X 30mm 2.0X Telephoto Conversion Lens
the descriptions are different but the products appear to do the same
thing

the specifications for the VCL-2030X  are:

· Diameter (approximate): 2 3/8" (58mm)
· Length (approximate): 1 1/2" (37mm)
· Weight (approximate): 2.9 oz (80 g)
· Screw Diameter: 30mm x 0.75mm
· Materials: ABS Plastic and Glass
· Color: Graphite Silver
· Magnification: 2.0X
· Lens Structure: 3 Groups, 3 Elements
· Grade: Standard
· Included Accessories: Carrying Pouch, Front Lens Cap, Rear Lens
Cap, Flare Prevention Hood

And for the VCL-HG2030 are:
spacer

Specifications
· Dimension: Approx. 59mm
· Length:
· Approx. 49mm
· Weight: Approx. 170g
· Screw Diameter: M30 W 0.75
· Material: Aluminum, Glass
· Color: Silver
· Magnification:
· x2
· Lens Structure:
· 3 group, 5 element
· Grade:
· HG

As far as I cantell the second one seems to be better (t is the more
expensive of he two)
since it is made of metal it has 3 Group 5 element and the first one is
plastic  with Lens Structure: 3 Groups, 3 Elements

can somebody tell me what is the best choice and why ; or if there are
better options for increasing the telephoto capabilities of my 30 mm
Camera?

Don't know if this is any help but I made a choice about 5 years ago and
bought the more expensive VCL-HG2037 for my DCR-PC100.  I figured any glass
you put in front of a good lens is going to lessen the quality but I haven't
noticed any lessening.  I now use it with the high definition HDR-HC1 and I
haven't noticed any image problems.  If the DCR-HC90 was purported to have a
good lens I would definitely consider the better doubler.  Also consider a
real sturdy tripod.  Even with my heavy duty one you can notice vibration in
a stiff wind at the full 20X.  If you have broadband and a good video card
you can see 3 high def wmv short flicks at
http://patandeleanor.nivlab.com/index2.htm   The BlowHole shots were taken
from Sandy Beach, about 1/2 mile away, with and without the doubler.  It was
an overcast day too.

Nope, not that sophisticated.  Only skylight to protect the lens.  I also
have a polarized but never use it.  Thanks for mentioning it.  I should try
it when shooting the ocean and see what difference it makes.

On any bright day, the polariser punches up the colours by reducing
glare. Any easy way to get more vibrant scenes.
