Problem with Sony TRV308

I have a 3 year old TRV308 (Hi8) that stopped recording over the last
few weeks.  It plays my existing tapes fine, but when in Camera mode
the view screens are black.  It will record but only this black
nothingness.  This began as intermittent problem that would go away if
I removed/re-inserted the tape and later, if I hit the reset button.
Now, none of these work.

I read the Sony website and did a chat session with their support and
they are sending me to a repair site - flat $211 fee - wow.

I also read about a CCD defective problem with numerous cameras, but my
model number isn't included (although the TRV318 and others included).

Anyone has have experience with this problem or have knowledge about
how serious or expensive it is to fix.  I suspect the worst, but
thought I'd check.

Thanks,
Rick

$211 sounds cheap to me...I'd go for it, if you want to keep the
device.

Otherwise, it seems your camcorder is dead. Perhaps it's telling you
that it's time to go digital :-)

Note that you might be able to digitize your old tapes by inputting
them to (or through) a new digital camcorder, so the fact that your Hi8
still plays is good.

Gino
