With that setup, I suspect that you only have one tuner that you can
use - that of the cable box, so you won't be able to watch one channel
while recording another.  Still, it should work with that limitation.

When setting your VCR to record, you will need to set it to record
from the line input - not from its tuner.  Did you do that?  If so, it
should record whatever the cable box is tuned to (assuming that the
cable box has functional line outputs).

When you want to watch the output of your VCR, you will have to set
the TV to display the signal from its line inputs.  Otherwise, you
will probably have to leave the TV tuned to channel 3 for normal (non
VCR) viewing.

I don't think I can offer any more specific advice than I did in my
last post.  If you haven't read the manuals for your devices, you
should do that.  And you can also try using www.google.com to search
for information on any technical terms you don't understand.

Some possibilities:

- The cable box A/V output doesn't work or isn't enabled.  Try
plugging that set of outputs (yellow composite vid, red/white analog
audio outs) directly to a TV input and see if you can watch.

- You have it wired incorrectly.  Make sure the outputs from the cable
box go to a set of _inputs_ on the DVD/VCR combo.  Double check the
plugs on the combo unit are the ones you want.

- The DVD/VCR combo isn't set up correctly.  If you plugged into the
rear inputs, make sure the setup in the menu isn't set for only the
front inputs, if you have them.  Some units only allow one input to
work at a time.

- You aren't setting the tuner on the VCR to the correct input.  It
has to be set to the A/V input you are using.

If you post the make and model of the combo unit, we might be able to
help you further with the menu settings and connections.
