Another daft question - NTSC camcorder - PAL DVD Recorder
Many apologies if this question has bee asked many times. I've bought a Mini DV Camcorder on Ebay - nice Sony one Also bought an LG DVD recorder (multi-region) to record DVDs from it. Unfortunately on trying to record I get the error message "can't record NTSC on to PAL formatted disc (or something like). I'd presumed maybe I could format the disc in the recorder as NTSC but it automatically formats it PAL when you load it - the book states that you can format from the "setup" menu but you can't. Any ideas how I can record onto DVD? Should I send the camcorder back (would be much easier with a PAL camcorder presumably - and maybe the camcorder should have been described as NTSC when it was being sold. Many thanks for any info received Cheers PS I'm in England and currently swearing at the computer, DVD recorder, instruction manuals and camcorder (each in turn). -- Andy Flowers

It's not a question of how the DVD is formatted, but the actual specs for the video itself, e.g. NTSC is 29.97 frames per second, PAL is 25, NTSC digital video is 720 x 480 pixels, Pal is 720 x 576. With that said, most DVD players sold in Asia output PAL, but can play either NTSC or PAL DVDs. Here in the States, I have a cheapie DVD player that is quite capable of playing both formats on my NTSC television. You might want to try and NTSC DVD in your DVD player and see if it works. In that case, you can simply burn NTSC DVDs (though you'll have to trade your PAL DVD recorder for an NTSC version). Otherwise, you'll either need conversion hardware (expensive), or you'll need to do it in software on the computer (complicated and takes a long time). Perhaps the only option is to buy an NTSC DVD recorder (or send the camcorder back) Cheers -- Andy Flowers What cheap DVD player do you have that converts PAL to NTSC?
I have several that will PLAY multi-region, but the output is however the disk is mastered. A PAL disk plays as Pal. But both my midrange Sony and Panasonic TV's will work with a PAL signal as well as NTSC. Seeing a picture doesn't mean that a PAL to NTSC conversion was done anywhere along the line. It most certainly does take the PAL video and convert it to NTSC. I can also do the same thing using the WinDVD player and DVD drive on my computer. But you still haven't given us any reason to believe your player does that. How did you look at the output? Your computer isn't doing it either. You're decoding for playback. You'd need to re-encode to record it as NTSC. ptra***@travelersvideo.com wrote: Show quoteHide quote > Mike Berger wrote: > >>What cheap DVD player do you have that converts PAL to NTSC? >>I have several that will PLAY multi-region, but the output is >>however the disk is mastered.
