Tapes made with another mini-dv cam (Panasonic mini-dv GS12)
don't play back audio properly on my Sony cam. The audio is choppy ...
it kind of stutters on playback. The video plays back fine.
Other brands of cams play back this audio just fine; the problem seems
to be only with my Sony.

Tapes I've made with the Sony play the audio and video just fine on
my cam as well as others. The two Sony tech support guys I spoke with
said that since playback is ok playing tapes made with my Sony nothing
is wrong with the unit and that Sony can't guarantee compatibility with
other brands! This seems wrong to me as PCM audio is PCM audio isn't it?
The tech support guys said that "Sony uses their own codec in the audio"
and as such can't guarantee compatibility with other cams. Something
sure doesn't seem right to me.

Any thoughts?

Any chance that your problem tapes were recorded in LP mode?  Compatibility
isn't guaranteed with LP.
