Can old tapes be read?

Back in 1994, I purchased a Sony video recorder.  I don't remember the
model, but it used 8-mm cartridges.  I'm pretty sure it was analog, but
I don't remember if it was HI-8 or not.

Most recorders today are digital.  If I purchase one, are they able to
read my analog tapes or must I have them converted to digital?

Some Sony Digital8 models can read 8mm and hi-8, some can not. Find out
about a model before you buy.

If you still have your old analogue camera you could connect it to a
new digital camera and use a pass-thru feature to process the tapes
through to a computer for editing and authoring to DVD.

There are I believe some cameras that will read the old analogue tapes
but check the features you need before buying.
