Extracting TS format video for editing

I just had some 8mm film converted to DVD.  I know nothing about this
and didn't ask many questions before hand.  I think they did it on a
Mac.  Anyway, the DVD plays fine and is acceptable, but I want to put
it on my PC and edit it.  I tried copying the files and it failed.  I
called the shop and they said I need to get software that can extract
TS format video.  Can anyone point me to freeware, shareware or
expensive-ware product that will do this and provide me with reasonable
editing capabilities?

What I want to do is remove over-exposed/uninteresting sections as well
as create different "chapters" for each topic filmed.  My folks filmed
3-4 topics on each reel and I'd like a DVD that will either play them
all or allow me to choose sections similar to what I can do with a
commercial video (scene selection).

I converted 15 reels and have 85 more to do.  If I can find the right
software I'll go ahead and get the rest converted.

Thx

One more thing I've noted is that I can't play the DVD on my Dell
laptop, but it plays fine in my DVD player.

Got it... Thanks!  I downloaded a few tools and am reading their
tutorials.  I think this will get me moving in the right direction...
