video to vga adapter?

I want to use my pc vga monitor to watch videos. My dvd player has
every type of output: composite/component video, svideo, coax, and
scart, but it is
only playing cds at the moment. I live in a small apartment and have no
room for a tv, but I have a Dell 19" crt. We watch dvds on the
computer, but it is a bit loud and not terribly stable. I found this
product:

a video/svideo to vga converter which looks like the ticket. I can play
dvds without running the computer or repatching anything. Are there any
other good
and/or cheap options?  I'm not afraid of soldering irons.

I just joined this group. Thanks for any help!

Cheap converters like the one you listed do normally not provide quality
video and you will probably not be very happy with it if you are concerned
with high quality.

If your DVD-player outputs RGB, you can build yourself a cable that takes
RGB in one end and VGA in the other. There are some issues with sync and
frequency so it will depend on your monitor if it will work. Here in
PAL-land, we often have SCART connectors on our DVD-players and they often
output RGB.
I recently built a 12 meter SCART->VGA cable from my DVD-player to my
projector and this works fine. I started out with a standard VGA-cable and
just cut off one end and soldered in a SCART connector.

There are plenty of articles and drawings on the net describing this
procedure.
AVS-forum is good resource where this topic has been discussed.

Ooh! I like the sound of that. Solder = Cheap. Cables are cheaper than
boxes. I am actually in Germany, (but don't speak it well enough yet to
be able to get info like this locally). I am no videophile, so I am not
sure about format. We are PAL, is that right? My DVD player has a Scart
output. I will checkout this link.
Thanks for the info.

You definitely have PAL in Germany.

Has,
I tried emailing... I posted on AVS but got nothing useful. Could you
perhaps email me a description telling which pins go where?
Thanks
