A very odd mystery!!!

Most videos (DVD, online, WMV, AVI, CD, etc. etc.) play perfectly on my
laptop, with no problems or issues.

Certain videos can be played using Windows Media Player, and on the laptop
they will appear only as a rectangle of a slightly lighter hue within the
WMP screen.

HOWEVER:

If I plug in an external monitor - running simultaneously with the [blank
WMP] laptop's display - the external screen will show the video perfectly.

Goto Tools/Options.../Performance/Advanced... and have a tweak with the
various settings there.  They control how to use overlays etc.  The slightly
lighter hue you describe is where the overlay is.
