AVI codecs?

I've received a large library of tech videos, mostly without audio and
mostly monochrome, from lab experiments in E. Europe. Most are detected as
..avi files, but many were evidently done with various AVI codecs that I do
not have. Is there a way to check an AVI file to determine what codec was
used before buying at random? Or, is there such a thing as a "universal" way
to view the AVI files?

Gspot will tell you what the codec is.  VirtualDub will play most AVIs
as long as you've installed the codec, and fix some files that are
defective.

Most codec's are available for free.  Try the following link to
download a codec pack that contains most of the available codecs:
