hi,

i have recently acquired some footage shot on a Sony HDR-FX1...

i am unfamiliar with the HD workflow, but was under the impression that
HD footage shot on mini-DV tape, could be played back at SD on a
regular (non-HD) mini-DV deck.

my experimentations suggest that this is NOT the case.

could some knowlegable scholar confirm this suspision for me??

peace ? thanks!

You are correct, this is not the case. However, if you put that HDV tape
shot with the FX1 back in the FX1 and switch the camera to DV mode it will
spit out standard DV over firewire. Presumably the HDV decks will do a
similar thing.

Although the camera records on a MiniDV tape, it can record either a
HDV or a DV signal.  If you recorded HDV on the tape, you must use a
HDV player (a HDV deck like the Sony HVRM10U or a HDV camera).  If you
recorded DV on the tape, then any DV player will work.
