VirtualDub/Nandub adding second AC3 stream

I recently found a movie on-line that came with AC3 packed in and a
separate AC3 file with fan commentary. I would like to put this audio
into the avi (xvid) with VirtualDub or Nandub as a secondary stream,
however I'm running into problems.

Nandub reports the format code, sample rate and number of channels but
it never "takes". This is the exact error/response I get:

AC3 File Parameters (message box title)
FmtTag: 0x2000, SampFreq: 48000, Channels: 2, bitrate: 192kb/s

Which seems odd because that tells me it should work, however it always
reverts to "AVI audio".

Please, clue me in.

The clue is "VirtualDubMod," which will allow muxing of more than one
audio, I believe.

As does Nandub (a Virtual Dub Modification) however neither work for me.
