What is an XLR adapter?

Hi, I just bought a Canon XL1 and am thinking about filming some
weddings and live stage performances.  I have been researching the
types of equipment I am going to need and have heard of XLRs for audio.
Can somebody tell me what an XLR is? Why it's better than your
standard audio cable?  Any other info on the topic would be very
helpful.  Thanks.

XLR is a physical adapter that is used with balanced audio lines -- it
allows using long runs without picking up hum or other stray electrical
interference.  I would think that a google search on "XLR" would turn up
rather a lot.

The XLR connector is a rugged 3-pin connector, universally used for
connecting microphones.  (There are other types of XLR connector, and
many other uses too.  But that's what you need to know here.)
