Video surveillance directly to hard drive

Hello,

I'd like to build a home video surveillance system. I'd like to use
one or more common DSP CCD/CMOS cameras with RCA output. Then some kind
of capture device with motion detect that in it's turn directly
records on to an external fire wire or USB hard drive whenever there is
a motion. An alternative could also be that it stores the frames
directly on a memory stick or sd card.

In order to keep it small, cheap, silent and less power consuming I
don't want to have a computer in between.

Do you have any suggestions on components that could be used for that?

Thanks in advance.

You're asking for what a computer DOES, but you don't want a computer
to do it :-)

I'm sure someone makes a dedicated system.   But it will be
essentially a one-program computer.     If you want to design your
own, resisting a computer may be futile.

You are of course right, but it seems a bit expensive to buy/use a pc
just for that and let it run day or night. I of course do have a pc but
that one I use for other things.
I found something called "CyberEye Security Camera".  Which stores
pictures and which then can be seen on a vcr. Cames around a third of
the price of a pc solution. Something similar that stores directly on
sd card would be nice.
Also MOTION ACTIVATED MICRO DVR looks nice, but it's not really much
cheaper than a pc.
I've also seen some usb grabber than one can connect 4 rca camers to
it. So some kind usb to usb drive device is "missing".
