Do not order through www.bestpricecameras.com

Hi,

Last week I put ordered a camcorder at www.bestpricecamers.com. Their
price seemed the lowest. The first suprise was that their shipping cost
starts 1t $50 and then for next day delivery they charge $150. My
husband wanted the camcorder for the weekend and their price was still
the best. I put the order and the next day, I get a call if I want an
extra battery and I they tried to use pressure tactics to sell me extra
accessories at inflated prices. I declined and asked to keep my
original order.

After 3 days, I called back and they claimed that they are out of
stock. I cancelled the order. They were very unappologetic about the
whole thing. They really suck. Be careful if you plan to shop at their
store.

When will people ever learn not to buy from crooks.
Buy it at a local store, no shipping, you get it in your hands before you
pay, and take it back if it breaks.
You get what you pay for. The Net is full of crooks.

You must live in area with a low sales tax. ;)

B&H and Adorama are bullet-proof choices, both reputable and with liberal
return policies, and for those of us in expensive cities, shipping is far
less than sales tax on expensive items.

I still buy a lot of what I use at the local store.  I can try it, compare
it, and if there's a problem, exchange it with no wait.  It's worth the
slight premium (7.75% vs shipping) for the security.

The net is full of crooks is it? I bought my Fujifilm S7000 for £309 from a
company
in England - I've seen it on sale in shops here (Scotland) for more than
£450.
Same with my camcorder - cheaper online. No shop to upkeep, little overheads
on a
warehouse - I'd never buy from a shop again.

If you insist on buying without learning about the process, then yes,
this could well happen.
Of course, buying locally is no guarantee of a good experience,
either, especially if you buy out of some guy's trunk, just because
the price is lower.

If you do your homework on vendors, you can save a lot online and get
exactly the same products as in the local stores.

and you can also get ripped-off with similiar appearing equipment that lacks
such niceties as warranties...

All depends on how much you value your time I suppose.

I've yet to find ANY online equipment vendor, either video or still
photography, that is appreciably cheaper that isn't trying to rob people.
Cheaper yes, appreciably cheaper no.  And I've been buying photographic
equipment on a professional level for over 20 years.

Having said that, there are plenty of decent online dealers, but none of the
dramatically discounted ones are on the up and up. None of them. The nature
of the industry they're trying to deal in doesn't have the profit margins in
it to give the kinds of deals that the crooks try to promote.

Sure, if you're a moron and incapable of distinguishing the reliable

Using Pricegrabber and resellerratings takes less time than driving to
the local store.

There are more than a few honest discounters online. Even B&H is
cheaper than the local stores.

I bought a D70 Kit and a 28-200mm lens for $1400 from One Call.  Local
price for exactly the same items with same packaging, accessories, and
warrantees was $1770. I don't know if you consider that "appreciably
cheaper" but it's significant in my book.

[SNIP sad, but often repeated story]

Arianna,

As you have unfortunately learned, the "best price," is not necessarily the "
best price."

As others have said, checking into the reputation of an organization,
especially an on-line organization, is the second step, before attempting to
purchase. Most are in business to get your money, maybe your credit card info,
and few, it seems, care about actually delivering merchandise, or service.

To the list that others have posted, I'd also add Calumet Photo (Chicago/US
area), as a good resource. An assistant just got a bum D70s, and Calumet
replaced it, before he had sent the offending unit back. Few questions asked.
I usually don't really "shop" for lowest price, but will compare amongst
tried, and true, performers. I may pay a few extra $'s, but the hassle factor
is way, way down.

Sorry about your experience. Hope you got a camcorder in time for the event.

IIRC, Calumet was an old well established when I visited their shop in 1966.
I think B&H and Adorama were around back then as well. Old companies
are often safer than newer companies. It is still a good Idea to do a little
research.

Ironically B&H was once considered to be a part of the gang of rip-off shops
located in New York city.

They completely rehabilitated their name and their business practices years
ago and now are amongst the finest of mail order sources.

One of their managers used to post quite a bit to one of the photography
newsgroups, I think he finally stopped after being slandered and insulted
too many times by a couple of lying morons.

A very nice guy and extremely helpful.

If you are referring to Henry Posner, I think he was in charge of sales
or something like that (he explained his position at one point a year
or so ago).  Haven't been over to rec.photo.digital for a while (too
many other things going), but he was fairly regular there.  He refused
to get involved in any of the idiots that wanted to argue with him as
a general rule, was always polite and generally a good source of
information.

If you intend to stay in business for very long, it tends to be more
profitable to be honest and reputable. :)   Fortuantely I never
experienced the bad side of B&H.  They're always been great to work with.

Thanks for recalling,. B&H has been around for 30+ years. I was a
customer for almost 10 years before I started working here and that was
11 years ago. I cut back on newsgroup visits because it seemed most of
the conversations had migrated to web-hosted forums.

Neverthess, reading, "A very nice guy and extremely helpful. " was a
treat. Thanks

I agree with the comments about B&H.  I just bought Final Cut Studio and
a bunch of related stuff from them.  My experiences on the phone with
them, I live in Anchorage, Ak, have always been good.  However, I went
to NYC this past month and thought I'd get FCP Studio while I was there.

I thought I might save a few bucks buying it at the store and saving
shipping.  The NY tax was $110+ something where the shipping would be
$74.00 or something like that.  Anchorage doesn't have sales tax.

I came back home and ordered over the phone.

The folks at the store were a lot less friendly than on the phone also.
Maybe it is the NY thing.  I felt like I was imposing on them.

At any rate I can't fault them for anything really.  They seem to be a
good resource.

Full Compass is a great choice also.  They have some things B&H don't.

Something doesn't add up here.  Sales tax in New York City is 8 1/2%, to go
from $ 74.00 to $ 110.00 is not a difference attributed to sales tax.

I've seen both sides of the spectrum in NYC.  I chalk it up to some people
just not being too nice while others are.

Given that the store is often loaded with customers and
that many of the salespeople seem to go nonstop for hours
with only small breaks, it probably is true that the
legendary "New York Attitude" breaks through from time
to time.

Living in New York I try to get to B&H early, before the
crowds show up (but there are still folks there).  I've
almost always found the sales people willing to take as
much time as I need -- and they don't push me in a direction
I don't want to go in.

While I'm by no means a big customer, I've done all my
purchasing there for years -- from film to cameras and
lenses.

Sorry to hear about your problems.  Consider it a learning experience.
What appears to be a great price may not be so great, especially on the
internet.  There are many photo dealers and many of those work under more
than one name on the internet.  It is best to check them out before making
any purchase.

I use B&H one of the good ones.  It may not always have the lowest
price, but it does give good honest service without surprises that generally
mean more total cost or lower value at many of the other places.

A typical story from a Brooklyn camera dealer.
