I'm considering a video capture card or device for my PC, but can anyone
recommend a make?
Do the USB2 external capture devices work well? I want DVD resolution at
30fps. And are there any firewire ones at a good price?

What will you be capturing from?

VHS tapes. Oops - maybe I don't need DVD quality then!! But whatever will
capture without actually losing quality.

If you want to capture with reliable video/audio sync, you want the
Canopus ADVC 100.   Not cheap, but it's (I think) the cheapest box
that locks the two data streams.

If a little drift between sound and picture doesn't matter, you can
consider a cheaper box.   There OUGHT to be a cheaper product that
synchs properly.  But last time I looked there wasn't :-(

I am in the identical situation. I was told that the Canopus ADVC 300
is the product to get because my VHS tapes (home movies) are very old
(>20 years). But the 300 is *very* expensive. Any comments?

I was also told that I should begin "cheap" just to get a feel for
this. I purchased a Pinnacle MovieBox USB with Studio 9 (got a great
deal). Is this any good to experiment with or is it pure crap and I
should get my money back?

TIA

It MAY do what you need.   But I'm afraid "pure crap" may be a good
description.

The Canopus boxes aren't cheap.  But, unless you want to get into pro
gear (which is not cheaper again, by an order of magnitude) they do
seem to be the tool for the job.

Thanks.

I still haven't decided whether or not to return the MovieBox.

What about the Canopus ADVC 100 vs. the AVDC 300? With my old VHS
tapes, would the 100 do the job or should I save up until I can afford
a 300?

Do you want the features of the 300?

What features does the 300 have over the 100?
