DVD-R/DVR Without Phone Line or Subscription

Can anyone recommend a DVD-R/DVR that doesn't require a Tivo type
subscription OR a phone line?  I have found a couple that say the
don't require a phone line to operate, but if you read a bit into the
specs, they DO require one for first-time setup.

Suggestion: when you first get it, go to a freind's house and use their
land-line phone to set it up.

I suspect that unplugging it and carrying it back to your house will
leave the setup intact. (I assume that has to do with the program
guide, yes?)

You might ask their tech support about that. Maybe you'll learn
something useful about quality of their support while you're at it!

All of the panasonic models with guides [dmr-eh50s is the most recent] get the
guide data for free via data sent along with the program information [OTA or
cable only -- not sat -- some cable boxes may block the signal, your mileage may
vary...].

There are other makers that include the same guide listings.
