Sony SLV 696 lost remote - how to reset to defaults

I have a Sony SLV 696 VCR but without the remote controller.

It's set to display tape information, date/time, minutes/hours etc.etc.

That ruins the viewing experience, it cannot be turned off without the
remote :-(

Is there a way to reset an old VCR to its default settings? Like we do
with computers? remove the battery or something?

Buy a replacement remote control from the manufacturer (expensive)
or buy a generic multi-device remote (prices from very cheap to very
expensive) and program it to your VCR. This will solve the immediate
problem, and give you more control in other areas too.

By a multi-device remote, I mean devices like the One-for-All, Radio
Shack or similar brands, RCA brands, even Sony brands, that have
codes for each device they can control, like 233, 302, 303 for RCA
VCRs, 199,212, 333, 601 for JVC VCRs, and so on. (These are made up
numbers just to give the idea). Try the codes for your VCR, and if
it works, you're home free.

Make sure that it has codes for Sony VCRs - like who would leave
Sony out? :-)  Since Sony makes these too, that might be your best
bet - but I think most any brand will work.

These things can be pretty cheap.

Good luck,
Gino
