I bought a Pyro A/V Link a few months ago, but soon noticed that it wasn't
quite up to the level of the Canopus box that I had used previously (but
then the Canopus is much more expensive and has a built-in TBC).

The worst problem is that bright colors will change from frame to
frame. They toggle back and forth every second full frame with PAL video.
NTSC is perfectly fine.

You can see this effect here:

Both clips are 1 second full DV resolution (the DV-compressed versions
didn't work after I uploaded them, so I converted to Sorenson-3). The
output is from a digital still camera and the same photo is used for
both (just zoomed in slightly differently).

There's a single scan line at the bottom that blinks at the same rate.
There's no blinking line in the NTSC version.

I have contacted ADSTech support, but haven't received a response yet.

No comment on  your real question, but ADS tech support in my
experience takes a couple of days to get back to you, but then works
pretty hard to resolve issues. I think the box is good value for the
price, but probably can be bettered if you're willing to spend quite a
bit more.
