hi there,
I'd like to know if it's possible to use a laptop (I have a IEEE1394 and
some USB2 input ports) as a monitor for my camcorder (sony HDR-FX1E)
while shooting.
thank you

The basic answer is "sure" but it really depends on how good you want
the results to be. Some apps that capture don't provide a full-screen
display option, and your lappie may not be fast enough to show a
smooth picture (but probably is, if it's newish and not too wimpy. )

While you're there, push the "record" button and save yourself some
tape. (Check to see if your laptop drive will keep up, and be sure to
disable power-saving that might shut down the drive in the middle of
shooting.) If the laptop drive doesn't cut it, a modern drive in an
external usb2 case will. Remember that even though you may not think
you need a 160 GB or larger drive, you do, if only for performance.
There's a pretty strong relationship between drive speed (transfer
rate, not rotation) and size.
