What Digital Video Camera to Bring to Africa

A friend will be moving to Africa for a year and some of us would like
to purchase a digital video camera as a present.  I don't know which
which part of the continent is the ultimate destination, but I believe
it is sub-Saharan.

What cameras would you recommend or features do we need to look for?
The charger should be dual voltage (they use 240 there?).  I assume
that a miniDV would be preferable because of weight and portability.
The fewer required parts would be better (like built in Firewire as
opposed to having it on the dock).

Anything else?  Any cameras?

Thanks!

That's a lot of real estate!

I visited Tanzania last year with a Canon MV630i but this camera is a
brick compared to some. They have 240v there, see www.kropla.com for
travel voltage and socket advice.
