Hard drive help needed

Have Toshiba RD-XS32SB with 80Gb hard drive and DVD recorder.
Came back in room and hard disk was click, click, click and
error 7061.  (The manual just gives 7000 for hard drive error)
Can do nothing with the machine. My fave Music videos DVD-RAM
also trapped inside.

I have one or two spare hard drives around so I removed the
Toshiba's 80Gb Maxtor drive and replaced it with an old Fujitsu
10Gb. The original drive was set to Cable select but I also
tried Master. Either way I now I get error 7034.

Any suggestions?

I'm prepared to buy a new drive but want to be sure it will
work! (Maybe they need specially formatting first?) And if I do
I'd rather get something bigger than 80Gb - if the Toshiba will
allow it?

Hi
If even the second HD does not work then I don't think that your maxtor hd
is broken.
I would check/replace the ribbon cable(replace with cable of DVD drive) and
connect the HD to the secondary IDE port.
If there is the ability then also connect the hd to a different PC, just for
test whether it works there.
Regards
Peter

While I don't have a Toshiba RD-XS32SB to verify your suggestion I would
find it very hard to believe that his DVD recorder has a secondary IDE port.

He means to use the cable from the DVD drive (since it's probably not
broken) and plug it into the secondary IDE port on the motherboard and the
old disk drive.

Thanks, Peter. I set the drive to slave and plugged it into my
PC as a second drive. It started clicking when I switched on but
the system did at least recognize it as a Maxtor Falcon - though
it said it had zero capacity and I could do nothing with it.

I've since tried another disk (Windows formatted) in the Toshiba
but with no success. I'm now going to try a Linux floppy I
downloaded to see if that can format it as a Linux disk. Then I
might try Unix. But I know nothing about either so I'm just
blundering in the dark.

Where do you get error 7034?  From both HD's?  Or from the one HD no matter
where you put it?

250Gb is $120 at Sam's Club  These things are CHEAP now.

As I recall I got 7061 from the original failure and nothing
else. Then I got 7061 from the replacement if I set the jumpers
wrong, eg, as slave or before I realized it wasn't formatted (!)
But I got 7034 when it was formatted and the jumpers set to
cable select like the original. Suggesting to me that the system
recognized it as an actual drive but probably didn't like the
format type or maybe even expects some other kind of system in
the boot sector.

There is a format command in one of the menus but this can never
be reached as everything is completely out of action apart from
the LED display on the front.

Yes, I'm willing to pay but it might not be enough even to buy a
new exact model of the original Maxtor 80Gb if it needs a system
on it. So I don't want to throw my money away with being sure
the disk would work in the Toshiba.

OK, if you get errors on BOTH drives the odds are that you have a hardware
problem with your controller.

If you have the ability I would suggest finding a compatible system (forgive
me but I don't know what a Toshiba RD-XS32SB is) and test the drives in the
other system.

If you only get the error with the ONE drive and it clicks when you plug it
in call Maxtor and send it in - it's toast.  I've had them be very nice to
me when I was loosing drives.  Heck they even upgraded me a couple of times
because my drive had gone out of production.  They are good people.

It may be worth looking to see if there are any 'installation' or
'setup' menus. Similar PVR hard disk machines have an option to
initialise the disk to the units preferences.

YOu can't just throw in any old drive.  They use a proprietary OS based on a
Linux kernel IIRC.  Simply formatting a drive with Linux, or Unix will not
work either, without that proprietary OS installed as well.  If you have
tried putting the RD's drive in your PC as a spare and it clicked, the drive
is dead, so no need to pursue that any further, and there is little chance
of salvaging any programs from it.  There are many sites around that
specialize in hacking Tivos, and miscellaneous DVR's.  See what you can
find, currently it seems like you are simply blundering through the forest

Thanks, yes on all 3, I stuck in a plain Linux drive and got
nowhere; I've abandoned the dud drive; and continue searching
the net for anything. I did find help for another brand but not
this one. I'll probably have to take it in to a repair shop,
wait a long, time, pay an exhorbitant bill.

You've already gotten the right advice, abandon the drive. In computer
circles, that's known as the "click of death".

If you know of someone else with the same recorder, pull their drive out
and use Norton Ghost to copy it exactly to a new 80GB drive, put the
drives back in the machines. Maybe not an *easy* solution, but if you
happen to know someone or know where to find one, it probably would work.

Yes, I've now tracked down a couple of promising repair shops in
my home town that do Toshiba stuff so I am hopeful one of them
might be able to fix it or even provide the new drive for me to
put in (ha ha!) Either way, if I can get it fixed I am going to
remove the drive, stick it in my PC and try to get a ghost image
so I can restore it myself if this happens again.

This machine is absolutely great for TV recording and editing of
videos to DVD but I want to avoid possibly hefty bills on what
is a simple drive replacement as they are fairly cheap to get
oneself.

Thanks everyone for input
