PLEASE help with MOV problem! Will pay

Hi guys - I have a serious problem and am hoping some of you can help.
I was away at a special memorial in Poland celebrating the 60th
anniversary of liberation of the concentration camps there. I was
filming an interview with a camp survivor with my new Nikon camera, a
pretty cool device that takes MOV files. Unfortunately I may not have
seen the indicator not to pull out the card (switching to a new one)
while it was saving and ended up truncating the movie I guess. All
others are playable except for this 228MB quicktime MOV file which
does not play.

In Media Play Classic I get the following error message:

Failed to render file

In Quicktime I get the following:

Couldn't open the file DSCN0945.MOV because it is not a file that
QuickTime understands.

Now I have seen many open these files - it does contain data and is
228MB - but using imovie or final draft express, two applications I
don't have. Others have been able to rename the file to a .dv to
extract the audio and video. For several reasons this has not worked
for me although I'm happy to try any piece of software you can
suggest. Since this is such a special file, I'd really go the extra
mile to extract what I have which should be pretty substantial. If
suggestions don't work I have put the file up at
http://www.jsoul.com/files/DSCN0945.MOV for download. Heck, I don't
care of the bandwidth costs either and would appreciate it greatly if
someone can help me with this or I'll even pay if need be. As you can
understand, it's pretty special and for some of you it may even have
some sentimental value as well.

Thanks so much in advance for any recommendations and assistance.

Odd, if you open the file in "Open Image Sequence..." the preview
shows a scene where there are a bunch of guys in orange baseball
caps.  So there is image data there that at least part of Quicktime can
recognize.  So far nothing else I've tried can get past the headers and
extract the image stream.  I'll have to dig out my old file recovery tools.

Ken - Thank you!!!!! Yes, this was a group of people who were
listening and gathered around the speaker! Later I was able to sneak
to the front. I couldn't even get as far as you did...

Using a text editor I opened the file and it seems that there is a
definite beginning and ending so I'm not sure what went wrong.

One thing you might try is to take a copy of another .mov clip
made from that same camera, but working, and concatenate
that in front of your bad clip.

  In Windows:  "copy /B GoodClip.mov+BadClip.mov New.mov"

You might try it with first removing the bad header and first
segment (in Hex, all that comes before the first time you see a
whole bunch of "20"s) in the Bad clip.  The header data would
still be off but you might be able to repair or convert it.  It might
even let you view the whole thing.

Ken - Thanks SO much for trying. I didn't see a bunch of "20s"
although I did see a bunch of the same entry appearing. I have tried
using parts of the header data to "match", e.g. there is a portion
that repeats CDEFGHIJ a few times and tried to copy data from a good
movie to line up but it doesn't seem to work. I guess I'll have to
keep trying... great suggestion.

Thanks so much again.

Use QuickTime to "import" the movie. I did that and was able to watch
the two girls making popcorn, and quite a mess, in the kitchen.

Bye.

I tried the import idea but got an error message "unable to convert to
a Quicktime movie." Perhaps the two girls making popcorn was wishful
thinking. ;)

I have the Professional version of QuickTime 6, and it was able to
import and show the movie I got from your web site. Are you implying
that the movie was not showing two girls making and eating some popcorn
in the kitchen?

Bye.

I too have the Professional version of Quicktime 6 and I got what I
reported - an inability to import the movie. What Ken got was the
right icon since the movie would have some people in orange hats
(everyone group wore different colors.) I can say with certainty that
the movie you were watching is not the same as the link I put up!
