GLITCH: split chapters on DVD's & the "next chapter" remote button...

I may be the only person who didn't know this but...in the hopes others can
avoid this problem, I'm posting here.

I've created several DVD's with multiple chapters.

Some of them feature a single timeline, others have each chapter split into
multiple timelines.

The reason for the latter is projects calling for the ablity to watch ONLY
one chapter.
For example, a tutorial DVD where someone wants only "step 4," then
returning to the chapter menu.

The "gotcha" is this:

With a disc where chapters are split into different timelines, if you want
to be able to jump to the next chapter using the DVD remote "next chapter"
button, you have to add a chapter point at the END of each chapter timeline.

The "next" button really goes to the end of the chapter you're watching, not
the next chapter but it appears to skip ahead when the next chapter sequence
loads. (I use 5 seconds of black before and after the sequence to facilitate
seamless transitions)

Maybe I'm the only person who was asleep in "DVD authoring 102" though. ;)

Thanks for posting that -- I was not aware and have filed that so when
I shoot myself in the foot, I can find an explanation of what I did wrong.

<chuckle> My pleasure Mikey!

BTW: the plot thickens!

I've tried this on several stand-alone players and a DVD-ROM (actually a
DVD+R burner) drive.

It's a crap shot so far - some devices "get it" and WILL let you skip,
others don't.

I tried Intervideo WinDVD - it *didn't* get it oddly. I mentioned this to
Intervideo and they seemed absolutely uninterested. Maybe if one of you guys
owns the product (I have an OEM version, unsupported) they'd take more
notice.

I know you have Encore so I can ask this:  Did you look into using a
playlist?  It overrides the "next chapter" action.

You can make a couple of playlists for different themes.  i.e. Watch the
entire wedding, watch just the wedding, just the reception, watch the
important dances, watch the cake cutting and toasts, etc.

But if they go to the chapter and hit "next" they get whatever's next in the
playlist.

I don't think I've ever used a "playlist!"

I've used the override command for playing timelines individually (have to
split chapters into different timelines for that)...

What advantages do you get with "playlists?"

I'll google it too but thought you might have some suggestions.

Thanks!
C.
