Hey folks!

I know a lot you have experience creating DVD's so I'm firing this question
out here.

Is there a way to define an audio track as something other than a language?

Here's the deal: I have a concert DVD which has three versions of the audio.
1) stage microphones
2) audience microphones
3) a mix of the above

I have the DVD mastered and playing fine BUT... the only "label" on each of
the above audio tracks is "English - English - English!" I suppose I could
label one "Japanese" and another "Esperanto" but I'd RATHER just say
"audience - stage - mix" for the different audio selections.

Any way to futz with this or am I running into a limit of the DVD format?

Thanks!
C.j

You can have anything be a selection item, any text, any graphic
whatever.  The associated VM commands are what matter and
you can change them if you need to.  In this case all you need to do
is change the "label".

How did you make the audio menu for that VTS?  Did you
create the background and selection fields/items?

Hey Ken!

I actually have a menu created that's working great for *selecting* the
audio to be played - take a look here:
http://www.ncf.ca/~af895/misc/audio_menu.jpg

Clicking on any of those will switch the audio to be played between the
three audio tracks. This works fine.

The tweak is: I'd LIKE to present each track not as "English" but as
"blah..." - different microphone mixes labelled "audience" or "stage" on set
top boxes.

If I put this DVD in a set top box right now and hit the "Language" button
on the DVD player, I see three tracks labelled "English" - I'd *like* to see
"stage," "audience" and "mix."

I guess I've never seen the audio selections used this way - it's always
English, French, Chinese...

Does that make any sense? I know I may not be using the correct terminology
here. Again, I may be running into a limitation of the format.

I don't know if this would work, but it could be that the players
use the info section of the VTS to find what they should display
for the audio "title".  There are two fields, one after the other. The
first is the language code "EN" in this case. The item immediately
below that is probably what is displayed "English" in this case.  It
may be that changing this with IfoEdit could provide the results
you are looking for.

If the players just read the code and display something from their
own firmware, then you are out of luck; but that would be both a
more limiting  and more costly approach.

I think that's what happens though.  In deference to different characters in
different languages where DVD players are made, they just implant a code and
the DVD player prints a label.

That looks GREAT!  Where did you get the art (or are you one of those people
that's really this talented?).

This is what I need, some visual design for my presentations.

Tom P.
I also need to get some samples up on the 'Net for people to see.
But I'm sooo busy I can't think straight.

<blush> Aw shucks Tom - thank you kindly. ;)

I'm no Picasso but yes, I do my own artwork - past life as a graphic
designer. ;)

I'm fond of classic technology ("The don't build stuff like they used to.")
and try to use it where possible in my projects, hence the Shure 55 SH
series microphone on that menu. ;)

I'm pretty sure that those labels are standardized for the
format and are "hard-wired" (actually programmed into
the chip during manufacture with a custom photolithography
mask).

You know there are several DVD-specific newsgroups where
this question has likely already been asked and answered.
Assuming you have already searched the archives of

There's a reference here:
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=266194
that calls for an external text file to describe the track titles BUT...
despite the tutorial being labelled "for noobs", I can't figure out how to
implement this.

They don't seem to say where the text file should go or what to do if the
source file wasn't an AVI etc etc... maybe I'm just being dense.

I'll keep looking! "MSS" might be the keyword I need to search on.
I'll cruise over to a DVD newsgroup too.

Thanks Richard!

So far I've not been able to directly impact on how the player
(PowerDVDXP, in this case) handles the change in the VTS
audio language label.  If I remove it or change it to "Unspecified"
the player just uses an "Audio #" label.  So it is looking like DVD
players may be "hard wired" as Richard suggests.

I still have a few possibilities to check out, but it is not looking
like the player is even using a text field from the .ifo or .vob.  An
example is that in the DVD I am using to test this out the third
audio channel is French and appears, in IfoEdit with the Euro
spelling but in the player with the English Spelling.
