Sony TRV-280 Camcorder - USB 1.0 or 2.0 streaming?

I dont know this isnt listing directly on the box. Probably Sony not wanting
to make it know its an old USB 1.0 specification but I guess I'll remain
optimistic until I know for sure. So if anyone call me which USB
specification this camera supports I would be grateful. If it only supports
1.0 Im going to have buy a firewire cable it seems to record DVD-quality
video to hard drive. Thanks for any comments.

Whether or not it supports USB2, use Firewire for video transfer.

Google search "firewire versus usb video"

If you want DVD-quality video, you're going to have do the transfer with
1394/Fireware anyway, regardless of whether the camera is USB 1.0 or 2.0.
An OHCI-compliant 1394 card is less than $20.

Dont need the 1394 firewire card, there is one built on my Soundblaster
Audigy soundcard. All I need is the firewire cable. BestBuy sells the
cheapest one for $27.99. I'll probably breakdown and buy one.

$28 bucks?! SCREW THAT!

I can get one at a local "tractor supply and surplus" store in their
electronics section for $10(no kidding)

Especially if the cable is what I think you need - a 4 pin mini (camcorder)
to 6 pin standard (SB Audigy - had one myself)

Wow. Forget BestBuy... WorstBuy more like it.

That's ridiculous. No wonder you didn't want to spring for a cable! LOL!

You should be able to get a cable for much, much less than that.  If you
don't need it in a hurry, I'd suggest looking on-line.

Well, maybe.  Some camcorders stream video over Firewire only, and use
USB only to transfer still images from the installed memory card.

But some Canons (e.g. Optura 60) claim that they'll stream video over
USB2 as well.  In that case, you should be able to capture video via
USB2 if you lack a Firewire port.

I admit to not being familiar with the full range of consumer camcorders.
However, I'd think that most software expects to find video hardware on a
1394 port, rather than USB.

Go ahead and try USB2 if you have a camera that supports it. It may come
with proprietary software that lets you do the transfer.

If USB2 fails, it's likely a whole lot easier to use Firewire with Windows
Movie Maker 2 than to try to "fix" the USB2 option.

Be realistic - Firewire was originally *designed* for one purpose:
transferring video.
USB2 was not.

A newbie who doesn't know the difference should be explained this very
clearly.

USB2 may or may not work and is decidedly a non-standard method of
transferring video between cameras and computers. If it works, they got
lucky.

What's so difficult to accept about this?

Yes, that's the other half of the question.  If your software won't use
a USB port, then you've got to have Firewire.

I would opt for firewire since you don't know for sure if it is USB 1 or
2 specs. And since you say all you have to do is add a IEEE cable, why
not do a a comparison?
