Are not all USB connectors 2.0 compatible?

Hi

I'm running Windows XP SP2, and I use USB 2.0 with the USB ports on my
computer. However, I also have a Sony GDM-F520 monitor with a built-in
USB hub, but whenever I plug a USB2 device into one of the ports there,
Windows says that "this device could be faster...".

I thought that all USB ports for 2.0-compatible hardware-wise. Is this
not the case, or might there be something else that needs to done to
enable USB2-speeds from the hub to the computer?

That monitor is old enough that it's likely
the Hub is USB 1.1. In that case anything
hooked up to it will only run at 1.1 speed.
The fact that your computer is 2.0 is irrelevant.
The monitor hub is an active device.

The monitor is USB1.1 only, most likely. You simply can't
use it's hub if you need USB2 speed, and with the hub
plugged into a USB2 port, it may also force that other
adjacent USB2 port into USB1.1 mode. The only solution is
to buy a USB2 hub or only use direct connection to the
system's USB2 ports without the monitor's hub inbetween.
