has probably been mentioned a long time ago but if anyone here is struggling
to get ona  half decent usenet provider that is totally free like
individual.NET was then try

http://x-privat.org

servers are alot slower than individual and a bit flakier, however, it's
free and it works, i know i'm a bit late but if anyone is on a really CRAP
provider and needs to shift then try x-privat.org

it took me about 24 hours after my registration before it was functioning
nicely but im here now posting with them and its not too bad

I should point out the individual.net costs 60p per month (10 Euros per
year).

I paid. Fast, reliable service:

https://news.individual.net/register.php

No connection to this group.

And cannot be paid for without PayThieves, a credit card or transfer fees
greater than the actual cost of the subscription.  I moved to x-privat also.

How can you pay with a credit card ? I only got a bank transfer
option.

You may not have been at the right URL for converting your previously
existing free account to a subscription account.

My experience of that with CC was flawless and took about 2-3 minutes.

Far too slow!

Try using http://cust.readfreenews.net/login.php and registering with
them. So far, just as quick as N.I.N.

Webnews is not an alternative to a real NNTP server as is provided by
individual.net.  There is so little info on that site that nothing can
be gleaned regarding if they also provide an NNTP server to which a
client can connect rather than use a webnews interface via browser.  If
the OP wanted a webnews interface, I'm sure he already knew about Google
Groups.

It's not web-based is it? I use Mozilla Thunderbird, and it's just like
N.I.N.

Sorry if I've got it completely wrong - but hey ho - it's working for me!

In truth, I'm just using them until my ISP adds ATS-A and ATL to their
newsfeed.  After that I'll be using them exclusively; 10GB/month is enough

i didnt think of my ISP

i just realized that here in the UK

BT have a news servers thats pretty damn quick

news.btopenworld.com

im on bt broadband i dont need to log on to that server so i dunno if its
anything to do with them knowing i use their broadband service (dont have to
log on for that either)

so i just typed into the server as news.btopenworld.com and didnt put a
password in and just put in the usual muddled up e mail address and wehay

give it a try if you like... they are missing a few groups, i can use
x-privat for those groups though, it hasnt been that slow for me (on a 2Mbps
connection mind) it still isnt as fast as N.I.N but hey, i cant complain
it's free!!

Individual.net/CIS have been a great free service for many years so I
didn't mind paying the 10 euros :)

readfreenews.net is going really well.  It's not that I'm stingy, I'd just
rather spend it on other things.  Like beer for example.

I've addressed this before, and I'd like to know why you wouldn't just go
with the totally-free, password-free, username-free, everything-free service
at Usnetserver.  Here's the server name:

<free-text.usenetserver.com>

They're fast, reliable, and run by a for-pay server company.  But there's no
charge for their text service.

That only provides read-only access to text-only groups (i.e., you
cannot post, just read others' posts).  According to
http://usenetserver.com/faq.html:

"free-text.usenetserver.com (text only groups, read only access, no
password required)"

Since the OP is looking for a replacement NNTP for individual.net, they
aren't looking for a read-only server.

Read only AFAIK. For a no registration, no password server yo could do
a lot worse than news.aioe.org

I see I must concede my error - as wonderful as the free service at
USENETSERVER is, it is indeed for reading only, not posting.

(I suspect that was not so in the recent past, but it doesn't matter now,
and it is surely inconvenient to be unable to post, even if you only do so
occasionally.)

My next choice would be the limited free service at TERANEWS.  You pay a
one-time charge of $4, but you not only get free service forever thereafter,
you also get binary service, which I think is relatively rare in the "free"
arena.

Free Usenet server (Max 50MB daily):
http://www.teranews.com
SERVER: free.teranews.com

I realize even a one-time charge of $4 isn't truly "free," but I've been
using the service as a back up for several years now, so as far as I'm
concerned, they've made more than good on their offer.

I have free and a pay Teranews accounts and I'm using neither at the
moment. All was fine until a month or so ago and then I started
missing articles. Comparing with other servers, it looks like TN is
missing 25-30% or articles. Hence, I'm using readfreenews at the
moment.

Get out!  Well, that's my second or third bad suggestion in a couple of
days, so I'll STFU for now, I guess.  This is basically how it is in the
low-end of the market.

I once tried pricing my product extremely low and it caused me problems
(like keeping the lights turned on!), so this is the invariable dilemma with
"free" or very-bargain-priced things in general.

But such (seemingly) basic rules were often (seemingly) violated on the
internet, where such truly-useful stuff as e-mail is still as free as can
be.  They're even competing...on free!

Another reason my suggestions have lately been, ahh, suboptimal, is that I
do use two pay servers myself on a daily basis, so I'm not up-to-date
anymore on how the bargain services are doing, such as this surprising
glitch you now mention at Teranews.  As you note, they have been a real
bargain + reliable for a long time.

Oh well, just FTR, I've switched from Giganews, which was simply great, to
Agent Premium, which is much cheaper and, so far, almost as great.  Then, I
also use Easynews because of their incomparable web tools.  Total of $25
monthly for an unparalleled package with unlimited downloading (including
binaries, 'natch.)

Maybe this time I'll help *somebody!*

I moved to teranews; $3.95 one-time setup fee for their free account.
Similar performance to news.individual.net, and I can actually access binary
groups with a 50mb/day limit..

Either that's a tyop for 500MB/day, or your binaries service is utterly
useless for anything except small quantities of pr0n.  It'd take nine days
to DL one ep of a TV show.

Nope, not a "tyop".  50mb/day quota for the FREE account.  If you want a
higher quota, you have to pay for it.  It's too bad that they don't
offer a separate server that permits only text-only posts (no HTML) with
no attachments that has an unlimited or huge per-day quota.  50mb/day is
still a huge quota if all you visit are the non-binary groups.  Some
groups have such a huge number of posts that you could possibly consume
your daily quota just downloading all those text-only posts, so you
should configure your client to download only, say, 1,000 messages at a
time.

50MB/day isn't enough for the perverts wanting to download porn or for
music or graphic enthusiasts, ahem, that "share" their files but then
the free Teranews account really isn't catering to that audience.
Neither did individual.net which, when free, was a text-only NNTP
server.  The OP was asking for a substitute to individual.net, not an
NNTP server that included binaries.

But then, the OP never really did ask for us to suggest alternatives but
was merely "promoting" his choice for an NNTP server.

I couldn't get any messages the last few days but tonight it worked. It's just
real slow. Any idea why x-privat is so durn slow?

Less pipe.  It's also been down for a few days.
