Do you still get the BSOD if you pull the PCMCIA card?

If it were to fail, say, 1 in 10 times with the card, but starts
flawlessly 100 times without it, then you could be fairly certain that
the problem is with the card, or its supporting drivers.

How often does it fail?

> ... what does the ntoskrnl.exe mean?

It is a fundamental part of Windows XP.  Microsoft says this of it:

| The core (also called the kernel) of the Windows XP
| Professional operating system. Code that runs as part
| of the kernel does so in privileged processor mode
| and has direct access to system data and hardware.

That's the reason why it's failure produces a BSOD.  If this failure is
a result of a bug in that component, a corrupted install, a hardware
failure, or a bug in some sort of device driver, however, is not obvious
from the message you get.

I suspect the actual error message you are getting is
"driver_irql_not_less_or_equal" Searching the web produces multiple
solutions to this problem.  If I had to guess, I would say that you have
a corrupted/buggy driver or possibly even a failing network card.

Make sure your system is up to date, including the latest drivers, and
you might get lucky.

Next time this happens, can you take note or an image in some way, of all
the content of the blue screen. Maybe someone will be able to come up with a
resolve from the blue screen content.

It's always preferrable to use an installer.

I would first note the size, dates and version (if there is one) of the
files in question.  Then, use windows update to get to the most current
version.  Check size, dates and version again to see if those files have
been updated.

This appears to be the current drivers for your network card:
