I have on board sound but cannot find which brand. Therefor I don't have
sound on my puter. Is there any free program that will tell you what kind of
sound you have on your motherboard so I know what driver to look for?

It could tell you after you install the driver.

There is an easier way though, these things aren't hard to
figure out if you know how, usually.

-  What make and model is your motherboard?

- What chipset does it use?

- What's the link to the manufacturer's product page?

Doesn't your motherboard manufacturer provide drivers?

The easiest way would be to find the make/model of your MB. The harder way
would be to examine the MB in the area around and to the left of where the
AGP slot is and look for the actual sound chip (hopefully something easy
like 'Creative 1391'). Then find some generic drivers for that chip and hope
they work.

Use the Force, luc.

Failing that, what is the brand name and model number of the motherboard or
PC ?

You could look in Device Manager. Is it that your volume is down?

I believe it is free for personal use and it gives quite a bit of
information about a computer's hardware among other things.

It gives more info than most people need but when I just ran it on my
motherboard it did identify my motherboard's sound components under Devices,
Physical Devices.
