Total Failure
I suddenly had a "mouse freeze" on me. The whole PC locked up and I rebooted, to Nothing! I have a 8m old p4 3.2 with 512MB Ram, Win Xp Home SP2, 200MB MAXTOR (Yes Maxtor..I know what you're thinking) Hard Drive that has been making a Grating sound for about a week. It's a Diamond Plus 9, SATA and I'm assuming it's this that has "Gone". Also NVidia 256mb FX5700 AGP graphics. When I reboot I get all the fans, power to the mobo etc, but no signal at all to the Viewsonic VE710b monitor. The H/D light comes on (Constant light, not flickering) for about a minute, then switches off. I get NO bootup screen or anything. Is this the H/D, MoBo, Memory or what? Any ideas Greatly appreciated. something. boot from the CMOS and not the hard drive) and it should show the boot sequence on the screen until it says some thing like "no boot drive found" (because you unplugged it). If it does this then the hard drive could be bad, but if it does not boot with showing anything on the screen then there is a different problem like RAM or maybe video card. I tried it without DATA connected, and got the same result, I'll try it without power now... I also already did the memory check thing, I got 2 x 256MB sticks, I tried it with each and still nothing. Oddly, I did get bootup ONCE after this all happened and I had powered down for about an hour, I quickly turned off and reconnected my K/B, but that was it..it didn't come back :-( When it was all fine, if I hit the front power button during the first few seconds of bootup, it would power down harmlessly: Now, the hard drive light stays on, the power remains and I obviously get blank everything - If this was the Graphics card it wouldn't affect the bootup like this would it? Thanks so far!..... -- Show quoteHide quote_____________________________________________________ *** Remove S P A M K I L L from my Email Address to reply via Email *** _____________________________________________________ "Zotin Khuma" <zoti***@rediffmail.com> wrote in message Disconnect the hard drive - both power and data cables,news:38vr5uF5tj0vsU1@individual.net... When I hit "reset" it does seem to do something, it flickers the lights on both CD & DVD drives as though it's restarted. Any more ideas? And then try to insert one RAM and start the computer. If the problem is not solve, remove this RAM and insert another RAM. If the problem is not solve, try to test with know good AGP and Memory. If the problem is not solved, I think your motherboard have some problem. Great, I'll give it a go!!! Thanx
