New Power Supply has a hot smell to it.

Hi Everybody,
I have recently built a new computer. I installed
along with it a 420watt Enermax Power supply.
It's great, but I have one complaint about it.
It really gives out a bad "hot smell".
I figured out, that the case was designed for a PII not a P4 3.0GHz.
As the CPU was running around 60-63 degrees Celsius and motherboard
temperature of 44 -53 degrees constantly.
Now this way, the smell was really bad. Like my whole room was
filled with this smell.
Now I bought another case for my computer. Which now has 120mm
exhaust fan or 8", as well as 120mm or 8" inlet fan.
Now my CPU runs around thr 52 degrees C mark and the motherboard
around 31 degrees C mark.
The smell is no where near as bad as it was. It is buch bearable
now.
But it is slighty there.
I was wondering how long does it normally take for the "new smell"
to go away. I though within a week it would be gone.
I am a computer technician professionally. I have installed hundreds
of computers. I have noticed the new smell, but this one of my own
really takes the cake.
I am even thinking about buying another power supply a different
brand.
Any ideas on what might be causing the smell?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

Enermax sucks. They are jusnk. Check your voltages and see.

I would have a hot smell coming from  a p2 at 3ghz too.

Thats a good idea... Fortron, OCZ, Antech.   I use an Aspire 500W  and it
does not smell!  And it runs cool too, and very stable accurate voltages.

If the power supply gave off a burn smell of any kind, it has to have
damage. Something overheated. It is very important that there is proper
ventilation. These supplies can be easily damaged where there is a lack of
ventilation. Maybe there is something in that computer that is pulling too
much current due to a defect...???

Dude, if the power supply was happy, it wouldn't be giving off a
burned smell.

I agree that it's time to chuck it though.  Once a PS is giving off a
burnt odor or if it's emitting white (or any other colour for that
matter) smoke, stop using it !NOW!

Doing otherwise is a bit like driving the car to the service station
when the oil warning light comes on (For the 2 people that don't know,
this would be a bad idea).

Incorrect. Like the engine in a new car, a PSU may "smell" when new as
HRs and power resistors burn off anything acquired during the manufacturing
process.

Aye, I had a CPU fan give off some nasty odors when I put it in; really
bothered me thinking something was going terribly wrong.  Whatever was
causing the smell went away, and it's been fine ever since (> 1 year).

I'd still be wary, though, and try to sleuth out exactly *where* the smell
is coming from, though.  Just because it could be completely harmless
doesn't guarantee that it is, though.
