Are these worth buying?
I'm still abit confused as to what they're for!?

See the follwing links:

I'm getting a SATA hard drive anyway... the specs say you can connect
DVD drives and make them SATA... so it worht me getting on efor this
purpose?

Thanks.

Huh?

All the boards Ive seen have

IDE PATA controller the good old IDE types of connections everyone is
used to. YOu use these for older style HDs and CD drivers etc.

Then you have an additional SATA type connection 2 or more.
You use these for SATA HDs .

You only need the SATA to IDE converters if you want to put an older
style PATA HD  on the SATA controller.

The main reason most probably do that like me is youve run out of the
older IDE connections.

Like me - I have
CD burner and DVD burner and TWO IDE hard drives on the IDE
controller. That used up all four of the connections. Its maxed out.

I had two more SATA connections so I bought two converters so I can
add two more PATA IDE hard drives.  Im not running any SATA HDs.
I also like to put my main HDs on the SATA connectors anyway cause of
all the hype about maxing out your IDE connections if you put two hard
drives on one cable etc,

The only SATA hard drives Id buy are the RAPTORS . The ony way id buy
SATA is if they rebate them down to the same price as the PATA hard
drives which are dirt cheap now in the US.

SATA does not give any perfomance benefit over the old PATA interface.

If your computer supports SATA then get SATA drives, otherwise stick to
PATA. The PATA->SATA converters are not worth the effort.

hmmm... thanks for both replies.
i'm a bit confused.
this is what my intention was:

buy the adpater i gave in the link and connect an existing dvd writer
to the sata interface and hence speading up the access to the dvd
writer.

at least... that's what i thought i could do from some of the customer
feedback i got from the links i gave.

or am i getting it all a bit confused???

I thought the gist of your query was do I have to put it on sata and
the answer is no.  Youll have an IDE controller too to use with the
burner.  The other problem is ---- all those devices , like SATA
converters usually say you can as well as  add on controller cards and
extra controllers added on to motherboards --- but Ive always had
problems with them. So I always put my burners on the primary
/secondary IDE.  Others claim they havent so the answer is maybe.  The
ones Ive got say they can handle ATAPI devices and so did all the rest
of the stuff I just listed. I usually run a lot of disks so Ive tried
putting burners, dvd drives on my built in add on controller, Promise
maxtor PCI card, Sata converters --- Ive always had problems but
others say they havent. They seem to run OK but then something screws
up and they dont quite run the way they do with the regular IDE
connection.

If you are so bent on it try it. And if it doesnt work put it on your
primary IDE controller.
